Building Joy: Exploring Community Engagement with Joy Architecture

Here at Joy Architecture and Interior Design, we’ve balanced moving forward with giving back. Our approach embraces innovation, while our heart lies in service – and we couldn’t be prouder to stand beside the organizations that perfectly align with our mission.

Through self-education, volunteering, community outreach, and financial donations, we do all we can to encourage the inspiring work of philanthropies like Habitat for Humanity. Read on to learn more about our engagement with the local community we call home.

Building Hope with Habitat For Humanity

Serving the James, John, and Wadmalaw Islands, Habitat for Humanity has constructed over 350 homes since its start 40 years ago. Serving the communities right here in Charleston has always played a prominent role in our company's mission.

At Habitat for Humanity, individuals can apply for a home through the Home Owner Program, and when selected, our architects create the new home prototypes. These highly functional prototypes are then used in a 50-home neighborhood that Sea Island Habitat will build over the next few years. This opportunity allows us to put our architecture skills to use in a new way – and to watch dreams come true for those who need it most.

Habitat for Humanity has an open-door policy that welcomes volunteers or supporters from all backgrounds. There are many ways to contribute, including donations of capital or time. In fact, Habitat for Humanity relies on volunteers to serve those in need. So join us in getting involved!

Promoting Recovery Through WakeUp Carolina

The recovery journey is a difficult one, aided by organizations like WakeUpCarolina that not only support every youth battling substance misuse but their families as well. Serving the Greater Charleston, SC area, this foundation is helping to strengthen our community, especially some of its most vulnerable members.

WakeUp Carolina offers support meetings and resources covering a broad range of topics surrounding substance abuse. Donations and support are always welcome and help make this life-changing program possible.

Each Thanksgiving, Wakeup Carolina hosts a Turkey Trot fundraiser at the Snee Farm Country Club, complete with silent auction and raffle prizes.  Joy Architecture + Interior Design and Joy Martin Art donated services and artwork to the silent auction while Joy and her children participated in the Turkey Trot as a family.  Participation sparks important conversations among families.

Combatting Hunger Alongside Feed My Starving Children

Feed My Starving Children works diligently to eliminate malnutrition and starvation in children around the world – with opportunities to serve right here at home. Our Minneapolis team did just that, helping to pack meals during the Thanksgiving season to show extra gratitude for the community we serve.

FMSC has five key elements crucial to its mission, including sustainable development, a Christian mission, pioneering food formulas, food distribution partners, and volunteerism. FMSC partners with organizations and ministries across the globe to get life-saving meals to those who desperately need them. Working to make a tangible impact by eliminating world hunger, FMSC has provided over four billion meals to children in need.

As Feed My Starving Children works to transform hunger into hope, there are many ways to get involved. Some opportunities include volunteering to pack meals, joining their monthly give community, coordinating your own meal-packing event, becoming a speaker to advocate for the hungry, and attending a gala.
