The transition from house to home is our team’s specialty. Known for creating spaces that are both livable and luxurious, we were inspired by the homeowners’ creative spirit and penchant for bold patterns and bright colors. Their love of shared but separate spaces dictated our design as we worked to incorporate a functional kitchen, new home office, mudroom with ample storage, and easy backyard access.
Free to unleash our imaginations, our whole home architects came up with a concept that showcased the vibrant style of Interior Designer, Erinn Farrell and the stunning tile work of Mercury Mosaics’ Mercedes Austin. In collaboration with these female entrepreneurs, JOY Architecture delivered a renovated home as beautifully unique as its owners.
LIVING ROOM
KITCHEN/DINING ROOM
We checked each item off the homeowners’ wish list by first removing part of the living room wall to streamline the overall layout. Once choppy and segmented, the new floor plan combines the kitchen and dining room – and cultivates a cozy, communal feel. Whether they’re making a meal or a memory, the homeowners now have a great space for homework, family dinners, game nights, and more.
WORK-LIFE BALANCE
This home ensures the easy transition between work and play, featuring a home office that promotes productivity – and looks beautiful doing it! The living room’s lilac walls and modern furniture add yet another personalized touch. And there’s even a curated gallery wall that displays art by local African American women.
Eagerly awaiting an opportunity to bring a new concept to life, Austin received the green light from Farrell to include a mosaic pattern called Rise. Cheerfully vibrant, hand-painted triangular tiles were then installed, gracing both the office and front entry wall.
MUDROOM
Tasked with creating a clutter-free space, we added practical cabinetry, durable rubber floor tiles, and a pegboard coat rack that adjusts to accommodate kids’ evolving needs.

EXTERIOR
The “After” photo stands in stark contrast to “Before,” and proves the enormous impact of a coat of paint and a few updated details. Now a dark gray shade with a lilac front door, the home is sure to stand out from others on the block.
